A container vessel was forced to seek refuge in the Port of Vigo, Spain, after severe storm conditions caused multiple stacks of containers to collapse while the ship was sailing along the Iberian coast.

The incident occurred after the vessel departed Lisbon, Portugal, when it encountered rough seas and strong swells associated with winter weather systems in the North Atlantic. The violent motion of the ship reportedly led to instability on deck, resulting in several containers collapsing and some being damaged or lost overboard.

Maritime authorities were alerted by the vessel’s master, prompting a coordinated response to guide the ship safely into Vigo. The arrival was conducted under heightened safety measures, including tugboat assistance, pilotage, and the presence of coast guard units. Anti-pollution equipment was deployed as a precautionary measure during berthing.
