Philippines Receives First Russian Oil Shipment in Five Years
The Philippines has received its first shipment of Russian crude oil in five years, marking a significant development in the country’s energy sourcing strategy amid global supply uncertainties.
Based on shipping data, a tanker carrying around 100,000 metric tonnes (approximately 750,000 barrels) of crude oil from Russia’s Far East is en route to the country, with the cargo expected to be delivered to a refinery in Bataan.
This development comes as the government explores alternative fuel suppliers due to ongoing global disruptions, particularly linked to tensions in the Middle East. Energy officials earlier confirmed that the

Philippines had initiated discussions with Russia to secure additional oil supply, although details on long-term arrangements remain limited.
The shipment follows a temporary easing of restrictions that allowed certain countries to purchase Russian oil, helping stabilize global energy markets affected by recent geopolitical events.
Historically, the Philippines sourced Russian crude prior to 2022 but halted imports after sanctions were imposed by Western nations. The latest delivery signals a possible shift in sourcing strategy as the country seeks to ensure stable fuel supply and manage rising energy costs.
Industry observers note that while the move may help address supply concerns, it also highlights the Philippines’ broader approach of diversifying energy sources in response to evolving global market conditions.
