IRAN ALLOWS IRAQI SHIPS IN HORMUZ WHILE OTHERS STILL RESTRICTED
Apr 06, 2026

Iran has announced that Iraqi vessels are now allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, even as strict controls remain in place for other ships. The statement came from Iran’s military, which described Iraq as exempt from the current shipping restrictions imposed in the area.

The move is seen as a significant development, as Iraq is a major oil producer. Reports indicate that this decision could allow up to 3 million barrels of Iraqi oil per day to move through the strait, depending on whether ship operators are willing to take the risk of entering the area.

Despite this announcement, uncertainty remains. It is still unclear if the exemption applies to all Iraqi-linked cargo or only to vessels directly connected to Iraq. There is also no clear guidance on how the rule will be enforced on the ground, especially with ongoing tensions in the region.

Shipping companies continue to face safety concerns. The Strait of Hormuz has been under tight control since the conflict in the Middle East escalated, with Iran previously warning that access would be limited to selected or approved vessels only. Many ships have avoided the route due to risks such as attacks, mines, and unclear passage rules.
