US Navy Attacks an Iranian Vessel Trying to Breach Blockade

In a dramatic turn of events in the Gulf region, the United States Navy attacked and seized an Iranian flagged cargo vessel after it reportedly tried to breach a U.S. enforced naval blockade near the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, 19 April 2026. The move has heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran and put pressure on ongoing diplomatic efforts.

According to U.S. officials, the Iranian cargo ship – identified as the Touska ignored multiple warnings to halt its course before being disabled by a guided missile destroyer. The U.S. Navy fired on the ship’s engine room to stop it and then sent Marines to board and take control. The United States says this was the first use of force since the blockade began earlier this month.

ADVERTISMENT

The blockade was ordered by the U.S. military on 13 April 2026, aimed at stopping Iran’s maritime trade as part of broader pressure linked to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. U.S. Central Command had warned all vessels that attempts to enter or leave Iranian ports without permission would be intercepted. Hundreds of ships had already been redirected or turned around before the latest incident.

In response to the seizure, Iran condemned the U.S. action, calling it a violation of the ceasefire and “armed piracy.” Tehran’s military leadership has vowed retaliation, and Iranian state media say the incident undermines fragile diplomacy. Officials in Iran have also withdrawn from planned peace talks, saying U.S. military pressure contradicts diplomatic efforts.
