Car Carrier Damaged After Hitting Bridge Pier in Bremerhaven
A car carrier vessel was damaged after it struck a bridge pier while maneuvering in the port of Bremerhaven, Germany, raising concerns over navigation safety in restricted waters.
The incident involved the vehicle carrier CMA CGM Monza, which had just departed its berth and was transiting through the harbor when the allision occurred. Reports said the vessel was navigating under strong and gusty wind conditions, making maneuvering difficult even with tug assistance.
During the transit, the vessel hit a pier located at the site of a decommissioned bridge, causing a significant gash along its starboard side. Initial findings indicate that the damage extended several meters along the hull, highlighting the force of the impact.

Authorities noted that the master had already requested additional tug support due to the weather, but the conditions still affected the vessel’s control while passing a narrow section of the port. The early morning timing of the incident also meant reduced visibility factors may have contributed to the situation.
Despite the damage, there were no reported injuries among the crew, and no pollution has been recorded. However, the vessel has been held at the port while inspections and necessary repairs are being carried out.
