Australian authorities have banned a bulk carrier from entering the country’s ports and waters for six months after inspectors found violations involving unpaid crew wages and charges for drinking water onboard.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) conducted an inspection at the Port of Newcastle on April 23, 2026. During the inspection, authorities discovered that several crew members were underpaid by nearly $15,000. Inspectors also found that seafarers were reportedly being charged for potable water, which is considered a violation of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC).

Following the findings, AMSA immediately detained the vessel and imposed a ban that will remain effective until October 4, 2026. Australian authorities said the action forms part of their continuing enforcement campaign to protect seafarers’ welfare and working conditions.

AMSA stressed that underpayment of wages and failure to provide basic necessities onboard are serious breaches of international maritime regulations. The agency warned ship operators that violations involving crew welfare could result in heavy penalties, vessel detention, and long-term bans from Australian waters.
