Greek Authorities Arrest Cargo Ship Captain After Vessel Sinks Near Andros
Greek authorities arrested the captain and a bridge officer of a cargo ship after the vessel ran aground and sank near the island of Andros, Greece, on May 6, 2026, following a large rescue operation involving coast guard units, commercial ships, and aircraft.
According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, the cargo ship identified as Corsage C. encountered trouble during the early hours while sailing near the rocky coastline of Andros in the South Aegean Sea. Reports stated that the vessel was too close to the shore before it struck rocks and started taking in water.

The vessel, built in 1982 and operated by a Turkish company, was carrying around 3,000 metric tons of baking soda cargo bound for Ukraine. Authorities said the ship had departed from the Adriatic region several days earlier before the incident occurred.

After the grounding, the crew issued a distress call as the ship suffered serious hull damage. Greek rescue teams immediately responded to the emergency. Several coast guard patrol vessels, a helicopter from the Hellenic Air Force, nearby ships, and a passenger ferry joined the operation to save the crew members trapped at sea and along the rocky shoreline.
Authorities confirmed that all nine crew members were rescued safely. Two crew members were reportedly pulled from the water, while the remaining seven were rescued from rocks near the coast. The crew consisted of Turkish nationals and one Azerbaijani seafarer. Local officials said all survivors were brought to a medical facility for examination and were found in stable condition.
