Iranian Shadow Fleet Tanker Catches Fire Near Jask, Raising New Maritime Security Concerns

A sanctioned Iranian-linked tanker operating as part of the so-called “shadow fleet” was reported on fire near Bandar-e Jask, Iran, adding more tension to the already sensitive situation in the region.

According to satellite images reviewed by maritime analysts, the tanker identified as Sevda was seen emitting heavy smoke while still afloat around 11.5 nautical miles southeast of Jask. Reports said the fire appeared to come from the aft section or rear part of the vessel. The exact cause of the incident remains unclear as of writing.

The tanker is reportedly linked to Iran’s shadow fleet, a group of aging vessels often accused of transporting oil while avoiding international sanctions. Many of these vessels are known for changing names, flags, ownership records, and sometimes operating with limited tracking signals to avoid detection.

The incident happened close to an Iranian naval facility in Jask, a strategic location near the Strait of Hormuz. Maritime observers are closely monitoring the area due to increasing military activity, vessel inspections, and reported tanker seizures connected to tensions involving Iran, the United States, and allied forces in the Gulf region.
