A Tanzania-flagged container vessel sank in waters near Batam Island, Indonesia, after reportedly taking on water shortly after departing Singapore, according to maritime authorities. The incident occurred on the night of June 5 and prompted navigational warnings for ships transiting one of the world's busiest shipping routes.

The vessel, identified as Golden Star 1, sank approximately six kilometers off Batam Island at around 10:30 p.m. local time. Authorities reported that the ship began taking on water before eventually going down. All nine crew members onboard were safely rescued by Indonesian authorities, and no injuries were reported.

Data from vessel tracking systems indicated that the ship had departed the Port of Singapore and was navigating through the eastbound traffic lane of the Singapore Strait's Traffic Separation Scheme when the incident occurred. The vessel later came to a halt before sinking in Indonesian waters.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) stated that shipping traffic through the Straits of Malacca and Singapore remained unaffected despite the casualty. The authority has issued navigational broadcasts advising vessels in the area to exercise caution and immediately report any sighting of drifting containers that may pose a hazard to navigation.

Reports indicate that the vessel was carrying containers at the time of the sinking. Indonesian media cited by regional reports suggested that more than 100 containers were onboard when the incident occurred. Local authorities conducted rescue operations and transferred the crew ashore for health assessments following their evacuation.

The MPA confirmed that Singapore authorities have informed their Indonesian counterparts and continue to monitor developments. Officials also noted that there have been no reports of oil pollution affecting Singapore waters as a result of the sinking.
