The U.S. Coast Guard has announced that the processing time for Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) applications has been reduced to approximately four months, marking a significant improvement from the previous estimate of eight to twelve months. The development follows ongoing efforts by the National Maritime Center (NMC) to reduce a large backlog of applications that built up after the 2026 government funding lapse.

At the height of the backlog, the NMC reported more than 19,000 pending applications, affecting the issuance and renewal of Merchant Mariner Credentials, medical certificates, and other maritime endorsements. Since resuming full operations, the Coast Guard has expanded its processing capacity and continued working through applications using a first-in, first-out system, with only limited exceptions for national security-related cases.

The shorter processing timeline is expected to benefit U.S. mariners by reducing delays in credential renewals and helping seafarers return to work more quickly. It also provides greater certainty for shipping companies planning crew rotations and vessel operations after months of extended waiting periods.

The Coast Guard continues to encourage mariners to submit complete applications well before their credentials expire. Applicants are advised to use the Application Submission and Additional Information Portal (ASAP), which allows mariners to submit documents electronically and monitor the status of their applications throughout the review process.

The latest update reflects the Coast Guard\'s ongoing efforts to restore normal credentialing operations while improving service for the maritime workforce. Officials also continue to advance long-term modernization initiatives, including the development of the NAVITA digital credentialing platform, which aims to simplify the application process and enhance the overall experience for U.S. merchant mariners.
