Yemen’s Houthi movement has claimed responsibility for attacks against two Saudi-linked oil tankers in the Red Sea, increasing concerns over the safety of commercial shipping in the region. The group said it targeted the vessels Encelia and Layla using missiles and drones, claiming that both ships caught fire during the incident.

The claim came shortly after the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that a tanker was hit about 70 nautical miles southwest of Al Shuqaiq, Saudi Arabia. According to UKMTO, the vessel suffered a fire onboard, but the crew successfully responded. No casualties or environmental damage were reported, while authorities continue investigating the incident.

The Houthis said the attacks were part of their newly announced maritime blockade against Saudi-linked shipping. They accused the vessels of violating the blockade and warned that more ships connected to Saudi Arabia could become targets. The condition of both tankers has not yet been independently confirmed.

The reported attacks add another security challenge for seafarers and the global maritime industry, especially in areas already affected by regional tensions.
