The cargo vessel Golden Leo sank off the coast of Odesa, Ukraine, on July 26, one week after Ukrainian authorities said it was struck by Russian forces while operating in the Black Sea. The vessel had been sailing under the Guinea-Bissau flag.

According to Ukraine’s ports authority, the ship had departed the port of Chornomorsk carrying a cargo of corn when it reportedly came under shelling on July 19. The attack caused severe damage to the vessel as it travelled through a coastal shipping corridor toward Romania.

Ukrainian officials said nine crew members lost their lives in the incident, while eight others were safely evacuated. The ports authority described the attack as a violation of international maritime law and said it placed the lives of seafarers at serious risk.

The Golden Leo eventually sank near the port of Odesa on Sunday. Russia has not publicly commented on the reported attack. The incident comes as fighting continues in the region, with recent weeks seeing increased attacks on Ukraine’s southern ports, which play an important role in grain exports.
