Taiwan has criticized China’s decision to impose traffic control measures on ships entering the Taiwan Strait during Typhoon Dolphin. Taipei said China has no authority to restrict access to international waters and described the move as unreasonable.

Chinese state media reported that ships heading north through the southern entrance of the Taiwan Strait would have to follow traffic control measures starting Thursday night. Vessels were told to move to safe waters and follow instructions from maritime authorities during the storm.

Taiwan’s Coast Guard said it had not seen any unusual movements by Chinese vessels and had received no reports from shipping companies about interference with radio broadcasts. It advised merchant and cargo ships to report any Chinese broadcast demands they receive while transiting the area.

Typhoon Dolphin was moving north of Taiwan and was expected to reach China’s east coast late Saturday or early Sunday. China regularly operates military forces in the Taiwan Strait, while Taiwan continues to reject Beijing’s claim of sovereignty over the island.
