OMAN — A major salvage operation is underway for the grounded Suezmax tanker Caroline Bezengi near the Hallaniyat Islands off Oman, as authorities and maritime specialists work to stabilize the vessel and limit further environmental damage from an ongoing oil spill. Maritime risk and response company Ambrey has been engaged to coordinate the salvage effort.

The tanker encountered difficulties on June 8 following an explosion of undetermined cause while sailing off Yemen. The vessel subsequently drifted northeast for several weeks before grounding on June 30 near Al Qibliyah Island. Reports indicate that the tanker was carrying approximately 800,000 barrels of crude oil when the incident occurred.

Ambrey said specialists have already boarded the vessel with assistance from the Royal Air Force of Oman to assess its condition and begin stabilization efforts. The wider response involves specialist personnel, salvage vessels, aircraft and more than 100 metric tons of equipment, while an international oil-spill response company has also been contracted to support the operation.

Salvage teams are facing difficult operating conditions because of the seasonal Khareef monsoon, which is producing rough seas and limiting access to the casualty. The vessel\'s condition and continued movement under wave action are also being closely monitored as responders work to prevent further deterioration and reduce the risk of additional oil escaping into surrounding waters.

Environmental concerns have increased after oil from the tanker reached parts of Oman\'s coastline and affected waters near an ecologically sensitive marine area. Omani authorities are monitoring possible impacts on marine life and fisheries, while fishermen have been advised to avoid affected areas and report unusual conditions. Salvage and containment efforts are continuing as authorities and response teams assess the evolving situation.
