The recovery position is a basic first-aid technique used for an unconscious casualty who is breathing normally. It helps keep the airway open and allows fluids such as saliva or vomit to drain from the mouth, reducing the risk of airway obstruction. Before placing someone in the recovery position, the rescuer should check responsiveness, airway, and breathing and consider possible injuries.
Steps for the Recovery Position
1. Position Casualty
The nearest hand of the victim is tucked to the buttocks with the palm faced up. The farthest hand is put across the chest near the cheek with the palm faced up.
2. Bend and Support
The farthest foot of the victim is bent with the foot flat on the floor. Support the neck; hold the hip; turn the victim towards the rescuer.
3. Maintain Position
Maintain open airway head tilt chin lift maneuver.
4. Monitor Casualty
After bringing the casualty to a safe area and conducting secondary survey, the casualty shall now be placed on a recovery position.
