A 15-year-old boy was rescued from an overturned fishing boat in the Bering Sea off Alaska after a search operation that also resulted in the recovery of two deceased boaters, according to the United States Coast Guard.

The 18-foot fishing vessel had departed Savoonga on St. Lawrence Island and was reported overdue after failing to return as expected. Poor weather and limited visibility initially affected search operations before a Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules aircraft was able to continue the search.

The Coast Guard aircrew later spotted the teenager sitting on top of the capsized vessel about four miles east of St. Lawrence Island. The crew dropped a life raft and survival equipment and coordinated with a nearby vessel, which proceeded to the area and rescued the teenager. He was reported to be experiencing symptoms of hypothermia.

The two other boaters were recovered unresponsive from the water and were later confirmed dead. The survivor and the bodies of the two deceased were transported to Nome. The Coast Guard expressed condolences to the families and thanked the vessels, first responders and partner agencies involved in the search and rescue operation.
