Five separate incidents involving commercial vessels were reported by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) on October 5, 2026, in or near the Strait of Hormuz. The reports included four incidents in which tankers were struck by unknown projectiles and a separate case involving an Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warning to another tanker. UKMTO said authorities were investigating the incidents.
The latest reported attack occurred at about 1637 UTC on October 5 while a tanker was transiting the Strait of Hormuz. According to UKMTO, the vessel was struck by an unknown projectile, causing a fire in the engine room. The crew was reported to be fighting the fire when the warning was issued. No casualties or environmental damage had been reported at that time.
Three other attack reports issued on October 5 were time-delayed and concerned incidents that occurred on October 3 and 4. UKMTO reported that tankers were struck by unknown projectiles, with one incident involving damage to an engine room. The agency has not identified the source of the projectiles and has advised vessels operating in the area to exercise caution and report suspicious activity.
In a separate incident on October 5, a tanker transiting inbound through the Strait was reportedly hailed by the IRGC about 11 nautical miles north of Khasab, Oman. The vessel was instructed to turn back or face being targeted, and its master confirmed that the tanker complied. UKMTO said authorities were investigating the incident and continued to advise commercial vessels to maintain heightened awareness while transiting the area.
