The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has expressed condolences following the deaths of five seafarers during an operation to free the hijacked vessel HONOUR 25 in Somali waters. Several other seafarers were also reportedly seriously injured during the rescue operation.

The HONOUR 25 was among three vessels released after being held captive by pirates and armed robbers in the Western Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden region. The other vessels, SEAMULL, also known as SIBU 1, and EUREKA, were freed in separate operations, resulting in the release of 44 seafarers.

IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez expressed sympathy to the families and colleagues of those who lost their lives. He also thanked the Government of Somalia for its efforts in securing the release of the vessels and called for continued medical care and support for the injured seafarers.

The IMO said 22 seafarers remain in captivity aboard the ASANA, which was seized earlier this year. The organization called for continued international cooperation to address piracy and armed robbery at sea and urged vessels operating in the region to conduct thorough security risk assessments and follow established maritime security guidance.
