A Liberian-flagged civilian cargo ship was attacked at a port in Ukraine’s Odesa region on October 3, 2026, leaving one crew member dead and three others injured, according to the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority. The incident occurred amid continuing hostilities between Russia and Ukraine affecting maritime operations in the Black Sea.

The Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority reported that the fatality was a motorman aboard the vessel. Three other crew members sustained injuries and received medical assistance. Authorities also confirmed that 13 crew members were evacuated to a safe location following the attack.

The incident adds to growing security concerns for merchant vessels operating near Ukrainian ports. Since the summer of 2026, renewed restrictions and attacks affecting Black Sea shipping have disrupted maritime trade routes and reduced Ukraine’s exports of grain and steel. The developments have also placed additional pressure on the country’s port operations and commercial shipping activities.

The attack highlights the continuing risks faced by seafarers working in conflict-affected maritime areas. While Ukrainian authorities attributed the strike to Russian forces, independent verification of the circumstances surrounding the incident remains limited. The safety of civilian crews and merchant vessels continues to be a major concern as the conflict disrupts maritime transportation and international trade.
