Two separate vessel collisions occurred within three hours at the anchorage areas off Chattogram, Bangladesh, on September 29, 2026, involving four bulk carriers and a lighter vessel.
The first incident happened at around 8:30 a.m. at Kutubdia Alpha Anchorage, when MV HG Sydney reportedly came into contact with MV APJ Shirin while maneuvering toward the anchorage. A lighter vessel, MV Sani-5, was also involved and reportedly sustained damage.
At around 11:30 a.m., a second collision occurred at the Chattogram outer anchorage after MV Akij Wave, which was anchored, reportedly dragged its anchor amid strong currents and struck MV Sea Alison.
The incidents resulted in reported vessel damage, but no casualties or marine pollution were reported by the Chattogram Port Authority.
The incidents highlight the importance of proper anchor watch, monitoring of currents, safe speed, effective communication, and continuous assessment of surrounding vessel movements in congested anchorages.
