An oil tanker caught fire following a reported drone strike at the Sohar anchorage off Oman on Sunday, leaving two of its 11 Indian crew members missing, according to maritime authorities.
The Nicaragua-flagged Petro Dolphin was among at least three commercial vessels reportedly struck over the weekend in and around the Strait of Hormuz. The incidents followed a warning issued by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards on Friday that ships transiting the strait without its authorization would face what it described as “definitive” punishment.
Two other commercial vessels were also reported hit during the weekend incidents, although their crews were unharmed.
India condemned the attacks, while its embassy in Muscat coordinated with Omani authorities to assist the affected crews and locate the two missing seafarers. Search and assistance efforts for the missing crew members were ongoing, according to the information provided by maritime authorities.
In a separate incident, the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker MT VALTHERA was reportedly struck by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, causing a fire onboard. All 11 crew members were reported safe.
The incidents have raised concerns over maritime security and seafarer safety in the region.
