CYPRUS — All 10 crew members aboard the Tanzanian-flagged cargo vessel AS Dream were successfully rescued after the ship began sinking approximately 90 nautical miles west of Cyprus on October 30, 2026. According to the Cyprus Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Larnaca, the emergency was reported at around 8:15 p.m., prompting the activation of the country's national search and rescue plan, known as NEARCHOS.
The rescue operation involved a helicopter from the Cyprus National Guard, the naval patrol vessel CNS Ammochostos, and the Port and Marine Police rescue boat Pentadaktylos. The nearby container ship MSC Hannah III also responded and successfully rescued all 10 seafarers. The survivors were subsequently transferred to the police rescue boat and transported to Limassol Port, where medical personnel confirmed that they were in good health.
The rescued crew reportedly consisted of nine Indian nationals and one Cameroonian national. The vessel had previously been associated with several port State control deficiencies, including reported problems involving navigation, lifesaving appliances, and communication equipment. Maritime inspection records cited in reports indicate that the ship was detained in Egypt earlier in October following the identification of safety deficiencies. The cause of the vessel\'s sinking has not been officially established.
The vessel was also previously linked to a seafarer abandonment case reported to the International Labour Organization and International Maritime Organization in September 2025. According to the International Transport Workers\' Federation, the earlier case involved unpaid wages and difficulties obtaining fuel and provisions, with the case subsequently recorded as unresolved. Cyprus authorities confirmed that the rescued crew members were handed over to the appropriate government agencies, while their respective embassies were notified through diplomatic channels.
